Body Language Gestures

Body language is an essential part of any conversation. Understanding body language gestures will enable you to better comprehend any situation. Hence, it is of utmost importance.

One of the most important body language gestures is eye contact. If the speaker makes frequent eye contact with the audience, he or she is seen as confident. The level of the speaker’s confidence is confirmed with the tone of his voice. If it is well projected and clear, it indicates confidence. A lack of eye contact from the speaker portrays shyness, nervousness and in some cases, a lack of self esteem. Speakers who constantly look at the floor or at their notes are also nervous and shy speakers. Their voices are often not strongly projected. Eye contact from the audience is another important body language gesture. Audiences give speakers information about how they are doing. Audiences who are interested will have constant eye contact with the speaker and be aware of exactly what the speaker is saying. Audiences that lack interest will show little or no eye contact towards the speaker. Audiences that do not agree with what the topic of discussion may even raise their eyebrows. Such body language gestures are important to look out for as they provide important information to the speaker.

Other body language gestures are made using facial expressions. Facial expressions are an easy way of reading people. Nervous people portray their nervousness by constantly looking at the floor. Even when they smile it will be a shy smile that often lacks confidence. A person who is worried about something or lost in thought will have a dazed expression. Observing such body language gestures will greatly help you to understand a person better. A person’s posture will also enable you to obtain information on them. Different postures convey different body language gestures. An example of this would be a slouched posture. Such a person is shy and often lacks self confidence. A strong posture on the other hand, indicates confidence. Such people are often active and can be seen smiling. A strong, warm smile is the best way to indicate confidence. Observing a person’s hands is another way to understand their body language gestures. Hands that move frequently indicate that a person is interested about what they are saying. Constant twitching of fingers is a sign of nervousness.

Understanding body languages gestures is essential to be able to obtain as much information as possible. People who master this will always have an edge in a conversation.
