Calligraphy Set
Calligraphy is regarded as the art of fine writing. There are many types of calligraphy. Each type uses a different calligraphy set. For people who are new to calligraphy, choosing an inexpensive calligraphy set that suits their style is important.
There are three main types of calligraphy. Western calligraphy uses a pen while Chinese and Japanese calligraphy use brushes. Therefore, when purchasing a calligraphy set, one must first decide what type of calligraphy they are going to perform.
Western calligraphy sets vary in size and prize. Beginners should purchase a set that fits their requirements without spending a large sum of money. A calligraphy set that is inexpensive will contain a set of about three pens. The pens will normally have fixed nibs. Therefore, if you want to change the thickness of the point, you will normally have to swap between pens. Such types of calligraphy sets may come with some spare ink cartridges. Other types of Western calligraphy sets come with one pen but contain about five to seven nibs. This is the preferred choice for many starters as they do not have to consistently change pens. These types of calligraphy sets are usually more expensive and come with pen holders as well. Such a calligraphy set is often the desired choice as many people can learn and develop their skills with the same set instead of purchasing a new one once the skills have been learned. Separate nibs can be bought and attached to such calligraphy sets without changing the pen. Therefore, you can always enhance your set without buying a whole new set.
Chinese and Japanese sets are very different from Western ones. They use brushes instead of pens. However, the brushes, like the pen nibs, vary in thickness. The brushes available are made from different types of hair. Types of hair include goat hair, rabbit hair, wolf hair and rat hair. These types of hair are all soft making the brush strokes extremely smooth. Beginners are advised to start with stiffer brushes as these can be easier to handle. However, some writers advise the use of the softer brush as it promotes beginners to learn to control their strokes. Chinese and Japanese sets usually come with an ink stick, water container and ink stone. Beginners should find a set that is not too complicated but one that suits their needs. Then they can begin to learn the art of Chinese and Japanese calligraphy.
